Opportunities & Challenges
- The College has been experiencing some decrease in enrollment for the past few years and needs to develop strategies for reversing this trend. Special attention needs to be given to retention of students and increasing access for the highly diverse populations in the service area.
- A new medium security correctional facility will be built during the next two years. With an already existing women’s correctional facility, Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp, and the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy located in the service area, the College will be well positioned to be a national leader in the preparation of correctional and law enforcement employees and related continuing education.
- The energy and mining industry in the College’s service area is substantial and offers potential for program development.
- Eastern Wyoming College is a partner in a statewide effort to expand distance education opportunities. Further, EWC is committed to strengthening partnerships with high schools, other colleges, universities, business and industry.
- The Governor’s Commission on Community Colleges has been appointed by the Governor of Wyoming to review the role and mission of community colleges with a special focus on their role in workforce development.
- Wyoming’s booming economy and local population demographics have created a workforce shortage. Some prospective students forego higher education and enter the workforce at an earlier age.
- The Wyoming Workforce Training Fund provides substantial funding to employers and employees for certificated training programs. This program has excellent potential for increased use by the College.
