The EWC Adult Peer Counselors are available to all students and especially attuned to the needs of returning adult students who, oftentimes, face multiple responsibilities, goals, and special needs in their pursuit of higher education.
Meet Your Adult Peer Counselors
If you have questions/concerns about returning to school, and about juggling the roles of home, family, job, and studies; if you are lonely or feel isolated on the college campus; if you lack vital information regarding college and/or community-based services; or if you just need to touch base with an "experienced" student, these adult students are here to help you. Give them a call!
Adult Peer Counselors sponsor activities to assist in the successful transition and student development of adults returning to school. All newly entering/returning students are eligible and encouraged to participate in these activities.
"Expanding Horizons to New Directions"
Student Development Programming
Horizons hosts a number of programs and activities each semester. All interested persons (men and women, young and old, students and non-students, displaced homemaker/single parent) are cordially invited to participate in these programs. Listed below are just a few of the typical events.
- Managing Home, Family and Studies -- Returning Adult Students Share Their Experiences
- Returning to school for adult students with families can be trying at times. The returning adult student may find him/herself under more pressure to meet family, school, work, and household demands. Learn how other students faced with similar situations have met these challenges!
- Project STAY
- A technical support group for students who are feeling stressed by external factors currently impinging upon their academic student status. Support from peers and support staff will be provided through a series of sessions offering positive alternatives to help ease circumstantial pressure and increased student retention capabilities. Methods in increasing student effectiveness for academic success will be emphasized. Facts and realities concerning academic probation and suspension will also be discussed.
- Study Nights for Student Parents
- Come to the EWC Learning Center to study and/or for tutoring services the week of midterms and finals. Organized recreational activities will be offered for children ages 2 - 5 and 6 - 9 while Mom/Dad study.
Support Groups
Horizons also sponsors support groups designed to help students and others cope with life.
- Living and Learning ~ Monthly Support Group
- A special time-out for returning adult students to take a break, catch your breath, receive support, and share and learn with others. Special educational topics selected by the Adult Peer Counselors will be presented with discussion led by campus and community resource personnel who will share their expertise covering a wide range of topics of special interest to non-traditional students.
Workshops - A focus on families
