The Daniels Fund is a Foundation which was established by Bill Daniels

August 30, 2002

(Torrington, WY, August 30, 2002) The Daniels Fund is a Foundation which was established by Bill Daniels, regarded by many as "the father of cable television", out of his desire to make a difference in the lives of those who might be overlooked by traditional college assistance programs. Daniels left a veritable fortune to four states: Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The fortune is to be used for totally philanthropic purposes. One of those purposes is to help make a difference in the lives of those young people who dream of going to college but who may lack sufficient financial resources to make it a reality. The name of this program is the Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program.

Beginning this fall, the Daniels Fund has partnered with each Wyoming Community College to deliver the program to eligible high school juniors. Each college has a site coordinator who will interface with their respective community college, the Daniels Fund, and targeted high schools. EWC Project Site Coordinator will be former director, Kathy Moriarty, who took early retirement in June, 2002 from EWC. Moriarty's extensive background in financial aid will prove to be a tremendous asset to the students and families she will be working with. Information nights are planned at Albin, Chugwater, Glendo, Guernsey, Lingle, Lusk, Southeast, Torrington and Wheatland during the month of September, 2002 for interested families and students. Exact dates and times of those specific information sessions will be made available at a later time.

The goal of the program is to select a cohort group of roughly 30 Juniors this fall for each community college with a total Junior and Senior cohort group of around 60 by next fall. Students will come to EWC for a series of fall and spring seminars on topics relevant to preparing for college. During their senior year, these same students will have the opportunity to apply for Daniel's scholarships. The scholarship's dollars are allocated exclusively to Wyoming Daniel's Fund participants. These will be either comprehensive, unmet need scholarships to any college/university in the nation, or $2,000 transitional scholarships to community colleges. Students who receive transitional scholarships for their first two years
may then receive comprehensive, unmet need scholarships for their Junior and Senior years of college.

"This is a fabulous program for students. Some participants will receive generous scholarships. Those who do not, however, will still have a significant advantage over other students in that they will be much better prepared to enter college and will have the added benefit of knowing how to access all sorts of resources for financial aid." states Moriarty. She is available on the EWC campus on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings in room T109 and can be reached at 532-8322, or 1-800-658-3195, Ext. 8322. Any families with children who will be juniors this year and may be interested in this program should contact Moriarty in a timely fashion as the deadline for applications into the program must be postmarked by October 11, 2002. Students must be Juniors now and their participation in Daniels Program will begin in November, 2002. There is no registration or program fee for students to apply or participate. Applications will also be available from high school counselors.
