November 25, 2002
(Torrington, WY November 25, 2002) November 7 marked the kickoff of the Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program at Eastern Wyoming
College. Approximately 50 students and family members attended an Orientation which took place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the college. Orientation speakers included Dr. Jack Bottenfield, EWC President, Kay Kurka, Manager, Wyoming Daniels Fund (pictured), and Kathy Moriarty, Site
Coordinator for the Daniels Fund for Eastern Wyoming College. The first academic session, which took place on November 16, focused on academic readiness and included a number of activities including analyzing individual high school transcripts for completion of minimum high school
graduation requirements.
A group of 25 students has been accepted into the EWC 2002-2003 program. The Daniels College Prep Program is being offered statewide for the first time this fall in partnership with all seven community colleges. Accepted participants attend a series of educational seminars over two years in addition to a multi-day residential summer workshop between their junior and senior year on a college campus. All seminars and summer residency programs are provided to the students at no cost. Students accepted to attend the EWC/Daniels College Prep program this fall come from high schools in Torrington, Lingle, Yoder, Lusk, Chugwater and Wheatland.
The Daniels College Prep Program teaches students how to pursue a variety of financial aid and scholarship opportunities, explore interests and abilities, make choices regarding the college they will attend and their college major, prepare to take the ACT/SAT tests, and hone their writing skills among other things. Students who complete the program will be eligible to apply for the Daniels Fund scholarship. Select applicants will receive either comprehensive unmet need scholarships to any four-year accredited college or university in the United States or transition scholarships to begin their education at a community college.
The Daniels College Prep Program begins formally in the junior year of high school. A second cohort of students who will begin this highly beneficial program in Fall, 2003 will be selected this Spring, 2003. For further information, or to apply to the program, please contact Kathy Moriarty, Site Coordinator for the Daniels Fund for Eastern Wyoming College at 532-8322 or 1-800-658-3195, Ext. 8322. Students selected for the program are those who show potential for leadership and academic success, and who display strength of character, a well-rounded personality, and the potential to contribute to their community. Students must also come from families with demonstrated financial need. According to Moriarty: This is a wonderful program which will benefit many, many students. I welcome all applicants. Moriarty says that ?many residents of Platte, Goshen and Niobrara family can easily meet the demonstrated financial need criterion. Moriarty will be working directly with interested students and their parents at the following high schools: Chugwater, Glendo, Guernsey, Lingle, Lusk, Southeast, Torrington, and Wheatland.
