(Torrington, WY) Cheerleading tryouts at Eastern Wyoming College have begun. Tryouts are scheduled on an individual basis to accommodate the schedules of prospective members. Tryouts are informal. At tryouts candidates work with 3 to 5 members of the team. We begin by teaching or reviewing the basic stunts and progress from there. Prospective members are also given the opportunity to demonstrate jumps and any tumbling skills they may have. Prior cheerleading experience is not necessary, however, the nature of this activity demands certain physical requirements.

The Eastern Wyoming College Cheer Team is a competitive co-ed team. They have been competing at the national level for the past five years never placing lower than eighth. This year's competition was the largest with the best teams in the nation competing. Eastern Wyoming College earned a sixth place finish.

Cheer practices are instructed by a certified coach with 14 years of experience. Cheerleaders are taught proper stunting technique as well as required to follow national safety rules. Competition size, college approved, safety mats are used during all practices. A rod floor is also used to teach and practice tumbling skills.

Cheerleading scholarships generally consist of partial to full book awards and either housing in the dorm or the cost of in-state tuition. Several cheerleaders have been awarded academic scholarships consisting of tuition and/or cash as well as cheerleading scholarships of books and housing.

The cheerleading program at Eastern Wyoming College is part of the athletic department and in addition to scholarships all related expenses are paid for by the school (uniforms, shoes, warm-ups, travel, etc.).

Since l993, EWC cheerleaders have gone on to cheer at Division I-A schools including: Colorado State University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the University of Wyoming.
