EWC Students Participate in Skills USA Competition

(Torrington, WY) Students from Eastern Wyoming College traveled to Casper on April 13-15 to participate in SkillsUSA Championships with this year?s official theme as "Step Up to Success." SkillsUSA Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is a professional organization for students in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations. It focuses on leadership, citizenship, and character development. The Club offers EWC students special opportunities to further enhance their schooling and skill development through activities, trips, and competitions at the local, state, and national level. The students competed in leadership events such as Job Interview, Community Service Project, Promotional Bulletin Board, Extemporaneous Speaking, Prepared Speech, and Customer Service. The technical events included Technical Computer Applications, Computer Maintenance Technology, 3-D Visualization and Animation, Web Authoring, Welding, and Machine Tooling.
Competing in the Business and Technology Division: Pete Cawiezel of Morrill, NE, and Jamie Herdt of Torrington, WY, both placed 1st for the Community Service Project. Competing in the Computer Hardware Maintenance was Mark Marlatt of Torrington, WY, who placed 1st. In Web Design, Derek Baker of Hawk Springs, WY, Marlatt, and Cole Liggitt of Morrill, NE all placed 1st. Cawiezel also placed 2nd in Computer Technical Applications. For the State Pin, Baker placed 2nd while Cody Livingston of Laramie, WY placed 1st. Livingston also competed in Extemporaneous Speaking and Prepared Speech where she placed 2nd in both competitions. In the Job Skills Demonstrations, Roxie Adams of Morrill, NE placed 1st. Herdt placed 1st in Theme Poster, Promotional Bulletin Board, and the Customer Service competitions. Herdt, Cawiezel, and Livingston were also all elected as State Officers. Advisors for the Business Division are Kristi McGuire and Kim Griggs, instructors at EWC.
Chance Pollo of Douglas, WY placed 1st in the Welding Division and Todd Wiseman of Torrington, WY placed 2nd in the Precision Machine Tooling competition. Advisors for the Welding and Machine Tooling Division are Russell Pontarolo and Leland Vetter.
Kristi McGuire, Business and Computer Applications Instructor stated, "EWC had a great showing overall winning the High Chapter trophy." Russell Pontarolo, Welding Instructor also stated, "EWC was represented extremely well by all the Welding and Machine students that attended. The contest for 2004 was designed very well."
All first place winners will be competing at the National Conference in Kansas City, MO from June 21-26.
