EWC's Veterinary Technology Instructors: l-r - Patti Sue Peterson, Peggy Knittel, Viqi Jansing, Susan Walker, Ed Bittner, & Monte StokesTORRINGTON, WY - The Veterinary Technology program at Eastern Wyoming College recently received notice from the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities announcing that the program will continue with full accreditation by the AVMA. The accreditation process involved the completion of a comprehensive self evaluation report by members of the EWC Veterinary Technology faculty. The self evaluation provided information to the CVTEA on how the program was meeting the eleven Standards of Accreditation. On March 30 - April 1 a five-member evaluation team appointed by CVTEA visited the EWC campus to meet with faculty, students and administrators to evaluate facilities, equipment and the curriculum. An evaluation report was completed by the evaluation team and submitted to CVTEA for the entire committee to determine the final accreditation status. Levels of accreditation include full, provisional, probational, terminal or withdrawn. Biennial reports will be submitted to CVTEA until 2011 when the next complete evaluation and site visit are scheduled. The EWC Veterinary Technology Program has been fully accredited by the AVMA since 1976.

The AVMA, established in 1863, is a not-for-profit association representing more than 73,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services. Structured to work for its members, the AVMA acts as a collective voice for its members and for the profession.

The AVMA provides a number of tangible benefits to its members, including information resources, continuing education opportunities, quality publications, and discounts on personal and professional products, programs and services. The Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities is responsible for the accreditation of more than 100 veterinary technology programs and is to assist in the development and improvement of veterinary technology programs.

Patti Sue Peterson, EWC Veterinary Technology Instructor comments, "The Veterinary Technology staff members have worked hard to meet the changing requirements by the AVMA for accreditation. Curriculum changes, new equipment and new facilities were available for evaluation by the site visit team. They were pleased with the accomplishments made since the previous visit. I am proud of our program and the people who work to make it successful."

"The EWC Veterinary Technology Program is one of the outstanding instructional programs at Eastern Wyoming College," comments Jack Bottenfield. "This program which includes instruction in large animal care draws students from across the country. Students completing this program find good long-term jobs that make a real contribution to the livestock industry as well as in the care and treatment of pets - all under the direction of a licensed veterinarian. As President of EWC, I am very pleased that this excellent, high-quality program has received continued accreditation status."
