EWC held a Criminal Justice Advisory Council Meeting

Eastern Wyoming College held a Criminal Justice Advisory Council Meeting on September 20th. The Criminal Justice Advisory Council is a group that meets to discuss and provide advice on current programs/changes and industry standards.

Members present included Rob Branham-ISP Agent-Wyoming Department of Corrections, Larry Curtis-EWC Criminal Justice Instructor, Wayne Deahl-EWC Division Chair, Billy Janes-Chief of Police-Torrington Police Department, Dee Ludwig-EWC Dean of Instruction, Don Murphy-Goshen County Sheriff, and Rick Patterson-EWC Criminal Justice Instructor.

The current status of the program/department was discussed, as were current revisions that are underway. The criminal justice club was also discussed and it was decided to review it over the current year to make changes as needed.

The current EWC criminal justice curriculum was distributed and discussed. Input was solicited from the committee members for changes that would be beneficial. Among the suggestions were: Increasing training in criminal justice psychology including areas such as interviewing and communication; Emphasis on report writing skills; Increase the use of scenario-based training; Develop course work in management/ administration which would include the basics and administrative decision making; Emphasis on physical fitness for those seeking criminal justice employment; Address restorative justice and issues such as community police. The changes to the curriculum will be presented to the council at the next meeting for their review.

Membership of the committee was discussed and it was suggested that it be expanded to include an institutional representative from the Department of Corrections, a criminal justice student, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Student internships were also discussed and all agencies agreed to participate with the department in providing this experience for the students. The contacts will be: Jeff Lamm-TPD, Bryan Moorehouse-GCSO, and Rob Branham-DOC.
