EWC Students Recognized at Ag Banquet

EWC Livestock Judging Coach JD Sexton recognizes sophomore judgers Justin Bivens, Mike Flores, and Jay Bristol.

Eastern Wyoming College students received a variety of awards at the annual Ag Banquet on April 30.

"Top Hand" awards were given to freshman and sophomores who exhibited, "excellence in the classroom as well as leadership in activities out of the class such as rodeo, Block and Bridle, Student Senate, and Livestock Judging," said Monte Stokes, DVM, ag and vet tech instructor.

Freshman recipients were Brandi Simonsen, Mullen, NE, Ag Business, and Drew Banks, Fort Collins, CO, Animal Science. Sophomores were Kyle McLean, Miles City, MT, Animal Science; Chris Cover, Ashby, NE, Farm-Ranch Management; Sherry Weise, Pequot Lakes, MN, Farm-Ranch Management; and Angie Stirling, Highmore, SD, Beef Certificate.

Justin Bivens, Wellington, CO, Mike Flores, LaPorte, CO, and Jay Bristol, Loveland, CO, all received the traditional end of the year livestock judging belt buckle. "The buckle is based on an accumulation of participation, dedication and performance for the two years of involvement," said J.D. Sexton, instructor and livestock coach. Rodeo team members were recognized for their dedication to their team, sport, and classroom, according to Coach Jake Clark.

The team was also recognized for academics and an outstanding average GPA. College National Rodeo Finals qualifiers for 2007 were recognized. They included current students Cover, Ty Kenner, Wood Lake, NE, Lane Lindsay, Hot Springs, S.D., and Wiley Johnson, North Platte, NE; and alumni Brad Johnson, Gary Gilbert and Jayce Johnson.

Lancer Rodeo High Point Club members received jackets. They include Cover, Kenner, Lindsay, McLean, Johnson, Jared Bilby, Bridgeport, NE; Jack Leiseth, Wall, SD; Logan McDonald, Hemingford, NE: and Quincy Opela, Stapleton, NE.

According to Instructor Tim Walter, ag graduates received coats. They included Leiseth, Stirling, Cover, Wiese, McLean, Jeremy Mansfield, Norris, SD; Sorrel McKay, Wall, SD; and Spring Moore, Boulder,WY.
