Adult Learning Center - GED Information

Process

  • Register with the Adult Learning Center in your community, and commit to attending a minimum of 12 hours.
  • Take an initial assessment of your skills, using the TABE testing instrument
  • Develop goals and an instructional plan
  • Study printed materials and/or work on computer assignments, as needed, in problem areas
  • Take and pass the Official Practice Test
  • Take the GED® test. Contact your local GED® testing Center (see below)

 Age Waiver Information

  • Students must be 18 years of age to take the GED® examination
  • Students who are 16 & 17 years old, must complete an age waiver application and have this application approved by the State of Wyoming before they are allowed to take the GED® examination.
  • All age waiver candidates must complete a program of study from a local Adult Learning Center
  • Age waiver applications may be obtained from a local Adult Learning Center
    1)  Page one of application is a demographics form which must be completed by the applicant. This form requires parental/guardian consent and must also be signed by the applicant.
    2)  Page two of the application is a Withdrawal Verification. This must be completed and signed by the local school district office.
    3) Page three is a Pretest Verification form. This form is retained by the local Adult Learning Center and is completed after the candidate satisfactorily passes the Official Practice Test.

GED® Test Information

  • The test is divided into five timed sections
    1)   Reading: 65 minutes for 40 questions
    2)   Mathematics: 90 minutes for 50 questions
    3)   Social Studies: 70 minutes for 50 questions
    4)   Science: 80 minutes for 50 questions
    5)   Writing: 2 hours for 50 questions plus an essay
          The essay component of this test requires that students write 'on topic'. If not on topic, the essay is not scored. The essay must show organization and development of ides through the use of examples. Students must demonstrate control of sentence structure and word choice. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation must not interfere significantly with understandability.

Scores Needed to Pass

It is the policy of the Adult Learning Center at EWC that GED® 
candidates satisfactorily complete the Official Practice Test with scores 
of 450 on each section of the test with an overall average of
500 on the completed battery.

The minimum passing score on the actual GED® is 410 in each
subject area with an overall average of
450 on the completed battery.

Computer Based Testing

Beginning January 1, 2013, the G.E.D.® test given at the Torrington campus is a computer based test (CBT). Students should review the information provided in the link below before they begin their CBT.

Hathaway Requirements

Students who earn an average score of 500 on the GED® may qualify 
for the Hathaway Scholarship for postsecondary education. See your 
local Adult Learning Center instructor for additional information.

Costs

  • $60.00 to take the complete GED® battery
  • cost to retake an individual section of the GED® is $10.00. Students are allowed to retest in any one subject area up to three times in ONE year.
  • Students enrolled at one of EWC's Adult Learning Center's campuses do not have to pay for the Official Practice Tests.

GED® Scholarships and Tuition Waivers for Post-Secondary Education at Eastern Wyoming College

GED® candidates who experience financial hardship created by the cost of the GED® examination, may apply for a GED® Scholarship from the Adult Learning Center in their local community.

Students who successfully complete a program of study with one of EWC's Adult Learning Center's and are successful recipients of their GED®, will qualify for a tuition waiver for enrollment into post-secondary education at EWC. The tuition waiver entitles recipients to enroll in two classes at EWC; College Studies and a free elective of the students choice. The waiver must be utilized within one year of the completion of the GED®.
