The Wyoming Equality Network (WEN) provides the infrastructure allowing Internet connection for most schools and colleges in the state. This network also carries compressed video (and audio) signals to create a two-way, real-time, interactive video experience between any of the WEN Video sites. Eastern Wyoming College provides some of its courses to its outreach service area and other locations in Wyoming through this system.

Course Interaction

In order to participate in your compressed WEN Video course, you will need to manage the technology involved. Students will receive a basic technology training at the beginning of their first class. This training is usually conducted by Aaron Bahmer, EWC Instructional Technologist.

You will be responsible for operating the equipment at your site from that point on. If you have technical difficulties, you should call the Help Desk in Cheyenne at phone (800) 327-3577 or (307) 777-5100. In addition, you should let your instructor know, if possible, by calling directly to the EWC WEN Video classroom at EWC, phone (307) 532-8247.

Technology

Student & Teacher Cameras
Each WEN Video room features two cameras that can be individually selected and controlled for position and zoom.

Document Camera
Similar to an overhead projector, the document camera has a flat surface upon which objects can be placed. A camera is positioned directly above this area and can provide very close-up, overhead views of the object.

Computer
A computer is connected to the system so that anything displayed on the monitor can be selected and broadcast. This is very good for presentations. Portions of the screen can be enlarged for easier reading.

Video Playback
A VCR, and in some cases a DVD player, can be used to broadcast pre-recorded video across the system.

Microphones
No-touch microphones are mounted in each classroom. With at least three sites connected to each other, when the system detects noise from one site, video signal is automatically switched to display that site.

WEN Video Classroom Protocols

  • Arrive early enough to set up the equipment and arrange chairs/desks before class begins. Five minutes ahead of time should be sufficient. Class connection is typically controlled by a computer and classroom activities should begin as soon as possible once connection has been established.
  • You are expected to attend class just as you would a regular on-site class. The instructor may send out a videotape of a class session if he/she believes there have been technical difficulties and if a recording is available. Distribution of videotapes will not happen because of a student absence.
  • Children should not be in the room during class, just as they should not be in the room during any regular EWC class.

Tests

You are expected to take exams on the scheduled date and the scheduled time. If you have to miss a test, be sure to let the instructor know so that he/she can make alternative arrangements with you. An approved test proctor should be in the room with you at the same time. Usually the test proctor is the outreach coordinator or an approved substitute.
