The Eastern Wyoming College debate team traveled to Riverton on December 9-10th for the Central Wyoming College (CWC) Debate Tournament. In addition to EWC and the host, other colleges in attendance included Casper College, Northwest College, Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
EWC communication instructor and debate coach John Hansen, webmaster & assistant debate coach Ron Bronson and five students; Mary Left Hand, Torrington, WY, Portia McCray, Longville, GA, Elena Merrick, Minier, IL, and Kacee Smith, Mitchell, NE competed in the novice parliamentary debate division and Amanda Firth, Preston, ID, partnered with a competitor from Northwest College competing in the varsity division.
“It was a strong showing in our second tournament of the year. We’re going to come back from the winter break ready to work and expect to do even better at LCCC in late January,” said Coach Hansen. The novice team of Merrick & Smith earned their first collegiate win in the tournament and Mary Left Hand was the 10th highest-rated speaker in the novice division.
The debate team will next compete in the Flatland Fiesta at Laramie County Community College on Jan 27-29, 2012 and the University of Wyoming Top of the Rockies tournament in February.
