EWC to host Author C.J. Box

New York Times Best Selling Author, C.J. Box

The Eastern Wyoming College Community Education department will host Wyoming Author C.J. Box for a meet and greet book signing event on May 12 from 2-4:00 pm in the “Corner” in the Verl Petsch Jr. Activities Center. The corner is located near the cafeteria.

Box is a Wyoming native and is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 21 novels including the Joe Pickett series. He won the Edgar Alan Poe Award for Best Novel (Blue Heaven, 2009) as well as the Anthony Award, Prix Calibre 38 (France), the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, two Barry Awards, and the 2010 Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Award for fiction. He was recently awarded the 2016 Western Heritage Award for Literature by the National Cowboy Museum as well as the Spur Award for Best Contemporary Novel by the Western Writers of America in 2017.

Black Hills Energy Donates $10,000 to EWC’s Agriculture Technology Education Center

Black Hills Energy who lives their mission of ‘every day, we want to improve life with energy’ is a new investor in Eastern Wyoming College’s Agriculture Technology Education Center (ATEC).

ATEC will be the premier agriculture facility in the region, boasting 29,000 sq. ft., including wet and dry labs, and a greenhouse. The goals for the new facility include enhancing agriculture education and developing workforce. According to Tim Morgan, Supervisor of Gas Operations for eastern Wyoming “it’s exciting to partner with the college and lay the groundwork for their future endeavors.” Mr. John Hansen, Director of Institutional Development for EWC further stated, “Black Hills Energy’s investment in ATEC is part of a larger belief in where we are heading as an institution.”

Dr. Monte Stokes, Director of EWC’s Agriculture program, noted “Our 70 Ag majors will greatly benefit from the investment of Black Hills Energy by enhancing the learning experiences while here. The donation is greatly appreciated.”

EWC is readying a capital campaign to close the funding gap and begin construction on ATEC. According to Todd Peterson, President of EWC’s Foundation “Black Hills Energy’s investment is a testament to their belief in higher education and the impact ATEC will have on the region.” Black Hills Energy has been a strong supporter of EWC and most recently donated a natural gas fireplace that was raffled off with proceeds benefitting student clubs and ATEC.

EWC is thrilled with their enhanced partnership with Black Hills Energy not only because of dollars invested but also because of increased opportunities for our students. Black Hills Energy employs a considerable number of EWC graduates and by working together, EWC can meet the challenges of the changing workforce.

EWC to Host Nationally Recognized Leadership Scholar at Baccalaureate

Rev. Dr. Donald C. Simmons, Jr.

Rev. Dr. Donald C. Simmons, Jr. at EWC’s Baccalaureate ceremony which is being held for students and their families. Rev. Simmons will deliver the keynote address “Learning to Lead: The Trophy Generation in an Age of Discontent.”

Simmons, who holds a Ph.D. in History from Denver University, is the author of more than a half-dozen books, including his most recent Organizational Leadership: Foundations and Practices for Christians, used in colleges and seminaries worldwide and now in its second printing in the US. He currently serves as pastor at Tremont United Methodist Church in Tremont, MS.

Prior to his appointment at Tremont United Methodist, Simmons held a number of leadership roles in variety positions, including as a corporate and a non-profit CEO, corporate and non-profit board member, university dean, community college trustee, college baseball coach and umpire, documentary filmmaker, author, pastor and city councilman. He has also served the administrations of governors from both major political parties. Additionally, Simmons has lectured at a number of colleges and universities around the globe, including Harvard University Medical School.

While director of the Center for Leadership and Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University, he focused his attention on political leadership. As part of that enterprise, Simmons co-edited Public Service and Leadership: An Introduction with former presidential candidate and U.S. Senator George McGovern.

In recent years, Dr. Simmons shifted his focus to include faith-based leadership consulting.

Years after completing his Ph.D. in International Studies from Denver University, he attended Baylor University’s Truett Seminary where he received a Certificate of Ministry in 2014. While in seminary, Dr. Simmons became interested in that he has termed the “hyper-intense leadership challenges” that pastors face. “There are very few environments, and ironically politics and religion are two of them,” Simmons notes, “in which the work environment places someone in a position so they are a participant in every aspect of the lives of those they lead, from birth to death and everything in between,” continued Simmons

EWC rodeo team members Wadhams and Schnaufer win team roping at Casper rodeo

Eastern Wyoming College rodeo team members Bryer Wadhams, freshman, and his partner, Trevor Schnaufer, sophomore, returned from the Casper College hosted rodeo with a first place finish in the team roping. The pair is from Pueblo, CO.

This win moved the pair up to 2^nd in the Central Rocky Mountain regional standings as they work for a College National Finals Rodeo qualification.

Teammates Logan Milligan, sophomore, Torrington, WY and partner Coley Nicholls, sophomore, Riverton, WY, were second in the average at the rodeo and won the first round with a time of 7.6 seconds. They are sitting 3^rd in the regional standings.

Sophomore Cody Lane, Torrington, WY, was 4^th in the tie-down roping average with a total time of 23.4 seconds on two calves.

In the steer wrestling, freshman Wyatt Schuelke, Faith, SD, split 5^th in the first round with a time of 5.5 seconds.

The Lancer Rodeo team will compete in the final rodeo of the season which is hosted by the University of Wyoming in Laramie on April 27-29.

EWC announces commencement details and speaker, C.J. Box

Eastern Wyoming College is pleased to announce that the 68^th annual commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 7:00 pm in the EWC Fine Arts Auditorium in Torrington, Wyoming.

The commencement ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm with a processional provided by Janet Howard, Pianist. Mr. Andy Espinoza, Welding and Computer Applications Department Head, will serve as the Director of Ceremonies.

Dr. Richard Patterson, President, will then provide a welcome and introduce special guests. Ms. Jessica Rossi, EWC Student Senate President, will provide a welcome on behalf of the students.

An address to the graduates will be provided by author C.J. Box. Mr. Box is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 21 novels including the Joe Pickett series. Box is a Wyoming native and has worked as a ranch hand, surveyor, fishing guide, a small town newspaper reporter and editor, and he owned an international tourism marketing firm with his wife Laurie. In 2008, Box was awarded the “BIG WYO” Award from the state tourism industry. An avid outdoorsman, Box has hunted, fished, hiked, ridden, and skied throughout Wyoming and the Mountain West. He served on the Board of Directors for Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and currently serves on the Wyoming Office of Tourism Board. They have three daughters and one grandchild. He and his wife Laurie split their time between their home and ranch in Wyoming.

Following the address by Mr. Box, EWC Foundation President Mr. Todd Peterson will then present the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award and an address will be provided by the recipient.

Dr. Michelle Landa, Vice President for Academic Services, will present the candidates for graduation. Following will be the presentation of degrees and certificates by Mr. John Patrick, President of the Board of Trustees.

A reception for graduates and their families will follow the ceremony in the EWC Cafeteria.

A ceremony will be held to honor the High School Equivalency Certificate graduates on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 6:00 pm in Tebbet rooms 131-132.

EWC Men’s Basketball signs future athlete

Eastern Wyoming College Men’s Basketball signed Ty Larson, from Douglas High School, in Douglas, WY.

“We are excited to have Ty become a part of Lancer basketball. Ty is a very good athlete and had a great career at Douglas High School. I believe the best attributes that he has is his floor sense and leadership,” said Neal Sherbeyn, EWC’s Head Men’s Basketball coach.

EWC announces public presentation by Sculptor Gareth Curtiss

Eastern Wyoming College announces a public presentation by sculptor Gareth Curtiss in Torrington, Wyoming. Mr. Curtiss has been contracted to do the art piece for the new Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC).

This presentation will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 pm in Mechanical Arts Room 116. He will be presenting information/power point slides on the processes of producing bronze sculptures and the business side of being a professional artist. Throughout the week he will be working with EWC art students. This presentation is free and open to the public.

Working in the tradition of the old masters, sculptor Gareth Curtiss creates monuments and memorials for our time. His career has spanned over thirty years and he is an expert in his field. Figurative sculpture is his specialty. His master level skills include; working in multiple sculpture mediums, sculpture enlargement, bas-relief, alto-relief, mezzo-relief, figure drawing, and all aspects of large-scale bronze casting and fabrication, including welding, patina, and mold making. All of Gareth’s monuments have been created, designed, and sculptured by him and all of his large-scale work has been cast at his own foundry. Gareth prides himself on his work ethic and is recognized by his contemporaries as a master sculptor and foundry-man. He uses no computer generated 3-d imaging or carving devices. All his work is through the artist’s eye to the artist’s hand.

He was born in Whitefish, Montana in 1959. Independent Study of art and sculpture under Richard Sprang began in 1979. His first sculpture was produced in bronze in 1982 and his first commission was created for Anheuser-Busch in 1986. Apprenticed at Valley Bronze Art Foundry, Joseph, OR from1987 to 1989, he built his own foundry in 1990. His first heroic size sculpture was completed and cast in 1991. One or more life-size or larger commissions have been completed every year since 1996, over 40 commissions completed to date, most of those being life size or larger, many with multiple human figures. He has created bronze statues throughout the United States and Canada.

EWC Women’s Basketball signs future athlete

Eastern Wyoming College Women’s Basketball signed Kaylynn Jefferson, from Lingle-Ft. Laramie High School, in Lingle, WY.

“We are excited to have Kaylynn join the Lancer Basketball program. Kaylynn has the potential to improve and grow as a college player, she is a good 3-point threat and the other aspects of her game will improve at the college level. She comes from a successful high school program, has been well coached and has the drive and desire to improve,” said Head Women’s Basketball coach Tom Andersen.

“Kaylynn will be a positive addition to both our basketball program and our campus”, added Andersen.

Emily Buchanan, from Yoder, WY, signs her letter of intent to play basketball at EWC.

Eastern Wyoming College Women’s Basketball signed Emily Buchanan, from Southeast High School, in Yoder, WY.

“I am pleased that Emily has chosen EWC to further her basketball career. Emily comes from a very strong high school basketball program which gives her a solid background. She is a strong competitor who I believe will continue to improve and be a solid contributor to the Lancer Basketball program,” said Tom Andersen, Women’s Head Basketball Coach.

“I look forward to working with Emily in the future and welcome her to our team”, added Andersen.

EWC Vet Tech club holding final dog wash

The Eastern Wyoming College Veterinary Technology Club will be holding their final dog wash of the semester on Saturday, May 6^th. Appointments will begin at 8:00 am and walk-ins will be taken until 10:30 am. The dog wash will conclude at 1:30 pm. The student technicians will do minimal brushing and do not shave out mats. A current rabies certificate is required to participate.

Pricing per dog is as follows:

Large Dog (50.1 – 90#) $12
