EWC Livestock Show Team places at National Livestock Shows

The Eastern Wyoming College Show Team traveled to The Arizona and Denver National Livestock Shows and brought home several awards.

Fourteen students represented EWC at the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix, AZ. They included  Tracy Austin, sophomore, Rozet, WY; Angelina Bannan, freshman, Lusk, WY; Lane Barker, freshman, Evanston, WY; Jory Carson, freshman, Lynch, NE; Shelby Cranston, sophomore, Moorcroft, WY; Justin Darby, freshman, Paulen, AZ; Brawley Darby, freshman, Paulen, AZ; Kort Gartrell, freshman, Paxton, NE; Jaxson Heylend, freshman, Evanston, WY; Hunter Hill, freshman, Scottsbluff, NE; Courtney LaMont, freshman, Oelrichs, SD; Ashley Reese, freshman, Roy, UT; Santiago Ramos, sophomore, Bridgeport, NE; and BobAnn Sinks, sophomore, Jordan, MT.

The team took cattle (prospect steers and heifers –Ty Steben and Angus Heifers – Sinks), hogs, goats and sheep (Dorsets from Griffith Livestock). The steer pen of three was second in their class and all three steers were sold in the club calf sale. The prospect heifer was the Reserve Champion Heifer in the Sun Classic Heifer show and also sold in that sale. The Angus heifers placed 2^nd and 3^rd in the junior Angus show and 2^nd and 4^th in the open Angus show. Santiago Ramos placed 9^th with his crossbred market hog and Jaxson Heylend placed 11^th in his. Brawley Darby and Ashley Reese each placed 6^thwith their black-faced market lamb in their respective classes. Jaxson Heylend placed 9^th with his lamb. Tracy Austin placed 8^th with her market wether goat. The Dorsets placed well and were the reserve champion young flock.

The judges and show team members then joined forces to compete in the Livestock Skill-A-Thon where the team of Bannan, Reese, Barker and Darby claimed champion team honors. Bannan was also the high individual over all.  Heylend captured reserve honors.

Bannan, Carson, Gartrell, Heylend, Hill, LaMont, Reese and Ramos all competed in the Collegiate Livestock Judging contest.  Gartrell was 10^th High Individual in the Junior College Freshman Division.

Results for the EWC Show Team in Denver were Dorset Sheep (Producer: Patti and Steve Griffith, Riverton, WY) –Reserve Champion Ram and Champion Lamb Flock in the Any Other Recognized Meat Breed Division

Dorset Sheep (Producer:  Sandy Snider, Powell, WY) – Champion Flock in the Any Other Recognized Meat Breed Division

Wether Sires (commercial sheep division) – Sanitago Ramos showed a ewe lamb that placed 4^th out of 30.  Ramos and Hunter Hill also showed in the Senior Sheep Showmanship class.

The only show the team has left is the Iowa Beef Expo where they will be displaying and selling their lowline cow/calf pair which was originally donated as a heifer project by EWC’s Veterinary Technology Instructor, Dr. Ed Bittner.

In the carload contest at Denver this year the team judged 6 classes and answered one set of reasons.  The team members were Tracy Austin; Shelby Cranston; Kaycee Gobble, Lewistown, MT; Hunter Hill; and Ashley Reese.  Gobble was the highest placing individual and finished in the top half of the contest dropping only 19 points on the 6 classes.
