EWC present Horticulture Extravaganza Sept 10-14th

Friday, August 31st, 2012 • 12:54 pm

The 2012 High Tunnel and Horticultural Extravaganza! will be eight days of hands-on learning, food and fun for anyone interested in horticulture and local food production.  High Tunnels are solar heated, manually vented, plastic covered cold frames, tall enough to walk into that can be modified to fit the needs of the backyard gardener to the commercial producer.  These structures protect your crops from highly variable weather and significantly increase the growing season, even in Wyoming.  If you are a frustrated tomato grower in Wyoming this program is for you!  The program will kick-off September 10th at the EWC North Campus in Torrington, WY.

Program highlights include: Monday September 10th – Friday September 14thwill be five days of hands-on educational workshops for the construction of three different styles of High Tunnels – bring your work clothes and be prepared to pitch-in and “learn while doing”. The cost of this week is $99 or $25 a day and lunch is included.  Saturday September 15th is a full day of classroom style presentations, by staff from the University of Wyoming (UW), Colorado State University (CSU), The Wyoming Department of Agriculture (WDA) and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).  The cost of this day is $29 and lunch is included. High tunnel and horticultural related topics will be presented including information on pest management, soils, seed preservation, crop production, and grant sources.  Local high tunnel producers will also be available for questions.

Two bus tours are also scheduled: on Sunday September 16th the tour will include Goshen County producers utilizing high tunnels and culminating in a tour of Table Mountain Vineyards, near Huntley, WY. The cost of this tour is $25 and includes wine tasting and finger foods.  Monday September 17thbus tour will include Armstrong’s Purdy Pumpkins in Brule, NE and Ricky and Lucy’s Herb Garden in Sidney, NE.  Armstrong’s are one of the largest pumpkin suppliers in the US.
