Chelsea Baars, sophomore farm and ranch management major from Lusk, WY, won the Young Farmers and Ranchers Farm Bureau (YF & R) Discussion Contest recently held in Laramie, WY, and will advance to the national American Farm Bureau discussion contest to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, February 10-13.
Baars won an all-expenses paid trip to Pittsburgh, a roadside kit, and three hundred dollars in cash from Farm Bureau. Additionally, she will have the chance to compete for significant scholarships to make it to the final four this February, including a $2500 scholarship for the winner.
The YF&R discussion competition is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each committee member. Contestants are given pre-determined topics. They are judged on their knowledge, speaking ability, ability to participate in a committee meeting and listen to others and air all points of view. The contest was open to all Wyoming college students with an interest in agriculture.
Baars advanced over 16 other competitors representing Sheridan College, the University of Wyoming, and four of her colleagues from Eastern Wyoming College, including Sara Koster, a sophomore EWC accounting major from Huntley, WY who advanced to the competition’s elite eight. Other people representing EWC included Jaxson Heyrend, freshman, Evanston, WY, Haley Lauze, freshman, Green River, WY, and Cody Powell, freshman, Torrington, WY.
