EWC’s Sugawara wins in Lamar
Eastern Wyoming College’s Taiki Sugawara, freshman, from Aizuwakamatsu, Japan won the Lamar Community College golf tournament with a +1. Sugawara, and his fellow Lancers were the top team with a +26 at the tournament held Oct. 5-6 in Lamar, Colorado.
“I couldn’t be happier for Taiki, who played great both days to get his first college win,” EWC head golf coach Zach Smith said.
Lancers Ryker Dunkley, sophomore, American Fork, UT, and Braylon Bingham, freshman, Cedar City, UT finished in a tie for fourth place with Otero’s Wesley Rodrigues with a +8. Lancers freshman’s Tytan Birchell, Roosevelt, UT and Coltin Powell, Ogden, UT finished in a tie with LCCC’s Bryce Raduziner for seventh place with a +11. Fellow Lancer Jax Oviatt, freshman, Lehi, UT also competed in Lamar.
“The guys played well on the first day with some very difficult pin placements,” Smith said. “We had to play defense on some of the holes because a little past the hole resulted in the ball rolling off the greens at times.
“I was proud of the guys for playing smart golf,” Smith added. “
The second day brought cold and wind, so the scores were higher on average on day two. The guys were patient and made the most of the day. We had a small lead going into day two but their patience and grit resulted in us pulling away for a great win.”
The next tournament for the Lancer will be on Oct. 19 in McCook, Nebraska.
