EWC hosts Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding School
The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Rodeo Team hosted its second annual Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding School from January 3-5. The event attracted 28 students from across the Western United States and Canada, ranging in age from 14 to 19 years old.
Students participated in a comprehensive program with instruction from top rodeo professionals, including Orin Larsen (9-time NFR qualifier), Shorty Garrett (NFR qualifier), Tyrel Larsen (NFR qualifier), and Troy Crowder (PRCA Rookie of the Year).
The event was held at the Goshen County Fairgrounds, where three stock contractors brought more than 90 horses, providing over 150 outs for the students during the three-day school.
Instruction covered a range of topics, from equipment use to fundamental techniques and safety procedures. Additionally, EWC employees Zach Smith and Joel Alworth were present to answer questions and provide information about the college for students interested in pursuing their education at EWC.
According to EWC Rodeo Coach Whit Peterson, the school’s goal was to help address the declining number of rough stock riders over the years.
“We aim to help build the future of rodeo and recruit students to EWC,” Peterson said. The program allowed students of varying experience levels—from those getting on their first horse to those with over 100 rides—to learn and develop their skills.
The event was made possible through support from Team Wyoming, Wyoming Tourism, The Black Jeans Gold Buckle Gala, and the EWC Foundation, which helped offset the cost for students. Special thanks were also given to the stock contractors: Summit Pro Rodeo, Stoddard Rodeo, and Wayne Eaton. EWC’s commitment to keeping the school affordable for high school students was also highlighted, as the institution strives to nurture the future of rodeo.
