EWC Golf Teams Sweep North Platte Tournament
Eastern Wyoming College’s men’s and women’s golf teams claimed decisive victories at the Region IV Tournament hosted by North Platte Community College on Sept. 18-19.
The Lancers played two unfamiliar courses in North Platte and rose to the challenge.
“We played two courses in North Platte, neither of which we’d ever played before, so we all came into the tournament not sure what to expect,” EWC golf coach Zach Smith said. “Both courses played great and the teams played well—especially on Friday when both teams played better, resulting in two more team wins.”
The EWC women dominated the field, finishing 158 strokes ahead of the second-place team with a combined score of +72. Sara Maciej led the way at +8, followed by Madison Fujimoto at +18, Jessica Applegarth at +22, Ashlyn Matheson at +26, and Elliann Irick at +31. Bailey Watson placed eighth with a +39, Georgie Paterakis was ninth at +41, and Quinlann Yeager tied for 12th, completing a commanding team performance.
“The girls were 158 strokes ahead of the second-place team, which is a ton of strokes to win by, so that was fun for the girls,” Smith said.
The men’s team also excelled, taking first with a +19. Troy Young led the Lancers with a second-place finish at +2, while Jace Nielsen tied for third at +4, Jamie Lambert finished fifth at +5, and both Kaden Linford and Ben Brown tied for seventh at +7. Freddie Dancox added a ninth-place finish at +8, with teammates Nash Coleman, Aiden Walker, Josh White, Landen Gilmore and Daniel Meyer also competing to secure the victory.
“The guys were in a dog fight with Lamar heading into day two, but they were able to play some solid golf and come away with a strong win,” Smith said. “We are off to a great start, and we are looking forward to keeping things going through this fall.”
