GOODLAND, Kan. – Eastern Wyoming College captured the Women’s Plains District Championship title April 27-28 at Sugar Hills Golf Course in Goodland, Kansas, finishing with a team score of +98 to earn the district crown. “What a historic win for the girls program in just our second year,” Eastern Wyoming College head golf coach Zach Smith said. “I couldn’t be more happy for the girls and what they’ve been able to accomplish in just two years.”
Eastern Wyoming College finished ahead of Dodge City Community College, which placed second at +103, while Garden City Community College rounded out the top three with a team score of +107.
“We started the program last year and took last at the district tournament,” Smith said. “Year two we win a region and district championship, what a great feeling and testament to their hard work.”
The tournament featured strong individual performances, led by Garden City Community College’s Fernanda Rodriguez, who finished first overall on the leaderboard at +16. Eastern Wyoming College was paced by Maddie Fujimoto, who led the Lancers with a fifth- place finish at +24.
“We started day two in third place, six strokes back of first,” Smith said. “We had some great play from everyone to come back and win by five strokes.”
Fujimoto finished one stroke ahead of teammates Jessica Applegarth and Sara Maciej, who tied for sixth at +25. Smith highlighted their consistency throughout the event.
“Sara, Maddie and Jessica all placed in the top 10 with Ash and Elli not far behind,” he said.
Additional Eastern Wyoming College results included Ashlynn Matheson in 12th place at +28 and Elliann Irick in 14th at +32. Lancer Bailey Watson also competed in the event.
Looking ahead, Smith said the team is focused on its next challenge.
“We are looking forward to going to Coal Valley, Ill., to compete in the NJCAA Women’s Golf Championship May 11-14,” he said.
The championship was held at Sugar Hills Golf Course, a public course in northwest Kansas known for hosting collegiate and regional tournaments.
Eastern Wyoming College’s victory marks a significant milestone for the program as it continues postseason play.
