RIVERTON, Wyo. – The Eastern Wyoming College men’s and women’s golf teams both claimed team championships at the Central Wyoming College golf meet Sept. 17 in Riverton, Wyoming.

The Lancer men topped the team leaderboard with a score of 3 over par (+3), finishing ahead of Lamar Community College, which finished at 15 over par (+15).

EWC also dominated the individual leaderboard, with Lancer Ben Brown taking the individual championship after shooting 2 under par (-2). Teammate Jace Nielsen finished second at 1 under par (-1), while Mason Evans tied for third at 1 over par (+1).

Archibald Stockton tied for fifth at 2 over par (+2), while Josh White finished tied for eighth at 4 over par (+4). Aiden Walker rounded out the Lancer lineup with an 11th-place finish.

On the women’s side, the Lady Lancers also claimed the team championship, finishing at 50 over par (+50). Northeastern Junior College finished second at 118 over par (+118).

Ashlyn Matheson led the Lady Lancers, winning the individual title with a score of 10 over par (+10). Madison Fujimoto finished second at 11 over par (+11), followed by teammate Evita Babraityte in third at 12 over par (+12).

Tristyn Green finished fifth at 17 over par (+17), while Izabel Nelson placed eighth at 25 over par (+25). Kaidyn Patterson rounded out the EWC lineup with a ninth-place finish at 28 over par (+28).

EWC head golf coach Zach Smith said the tournament presented challenging conditions for both teams.

“Well, Wyoming finally got some rain, and I’m not complaining because we needed it,” Smith said. “The second day was cut short after about 15 holes because of a huge weather cell that sat in for some time.”

Smith said Stockton was particularly affected by the weather delay and shortened round.

“I felt bad for freshman Stockton Archibald, as he was having a great round and had a share of the lead when the event was called,” Smith said. “He was pretty bummed out, but I’m confident his time is coming soon where he’ll win his first college tournament.”

Despite the difficult course conditions and weather, Smith was pleased with the performance of both teams.

“Once again this week, both teams played well to get the team and individual wins,” Smith said. “They had all the pins set in difficult locations, so I was happy to see both squads thoughtfully attack the course.”

The individual victories were milestones for both Brown and Matheson. Matheson earned her third collegiate tournament victory, while Brown captured his fifth individual win.

“I was happy to see Ash get her third college victory and Ben get his fifth individual win,” Smith said.

The Lancers will return to action this week at McCook, Nebraska, where they will compete at the Heritage Hills Golf Course.

“We are excited to head to McCook this week to take on the challenging Heritage Hills Course,” Smith said.
