EWC Golf Teams Sweep NJC and Home Tournaments

Eastern Wyoming College’s (EWC) men’s and women’s golf teams swept the tournaments in Sterling and at their home tournament in Torrington.

“We had a hectic week last week due to NJC’s tournament being rescheduled for the two days before our home tournament due to weather. The guys and girls both came away with 20-plus stroke team victories thanks to some consistent play from both teams in Sterling,” EWC golf coach Zach Smith said. “Both teams played very well at home too.”

Eastern Wyoming College’s men’s team finished the tournament at Northeastern Junior College at the top of the leaderboard with a +1, 31 strokes ahead of Otero College. Otero finished second with a +32, followed by Central Wyoming College with a +41. The Lady Lancers also finished at the top of the leaderboard, followed by Central Wyoming College.

“The guys and girls both came away with 20-plus stroke team victories thanks to some consistent play from both teams in Sterling,” Smith said.

The EWC men’s golf team delivered an impressive performance, with seven team members finishing in the top 10. Lancer Freddie Dancox won the NJC tournament with a -6, followed by teammate Taiki Sugawara with a -2. Lancer Tytan Birchall finished third with a -1, and Braylon Bingham finished fourth with a +1. Lancer Coltin Powell tied for fifth with a +3. Fellow Lancer Jamie Lambert finished ninth, shooting a +6. Lancers Joshua Chapman, Jax Oviatt, Josh Lance and Mathis Fortin also competed in Sterling.

“Freshman Freddie Dancox had a terrific showing, his best of the year, by shooting a -6 to win the tournament by four strokes,” Smith said. “The girls had five finish in the top 10, which helped them to a fifth straight region win.”

In the Lancers’ home tournament in Torrington, both teams again finished at the top of the leaderboard.

“The men’s team played very well, led by Taiki and Braylon battling it out for overall first-place honors, with Taiki edging Braylon out by a stroke,” Smith said. “The men’s second team played very well at home again this week, with them taking third overall in the tournament.”

The Lancer men finished their home tournament with a -16, ahead of Otero College, which shot a +14. The second Eastern Wyoming College team finished third with a +19.

Lancer Taiki Sugawara topped the men’s leaderboard with a -8, one stroke ahead of teammate Braylon Bingham. Lancer Coltin Powell finished third with a -3. Lancer Joshua Chapman tied for fifth with a -1, while Lancer Tytan Birchall tied for ninth.
