EWC Men’s Golf Wins Region IX West District Championship
Eastern Wyoming College’s (EWC) men’s golf team won the Region IX West District Championship, played at The Olde Course in Loveland, Colorado.
“The guys played great all three rounds; it was a historic performance for the team,” EWC head golf coach Zach Smith said. “I couldn’t be happier for the team.”
The Lancers finished the tournament at 29-under, 12 strokes ahead of second-place North Idaho College. Otero College and Central Wyoming College tied for third at 31-over.
All five Lancers finished in the top 10, with Tytan Birchell topping the leaderboard at 14-under. Fellow Lancer Braylon Bingham finished third at 7-under, and Taiki Sugawara finished fourth at 6-under. Colton Powell placed eighth at 1-under, and Josh Chapman tied for 10th at 3-over.
“All five of the guys played well, especially Tytan, Braylon, and Taiki, shooting a combined 27-under,” Smith said. “Josh and Colton also played solid both days. It was a huge team effort.”
Birchell has been on a roll lately, Smith added. He tied the course record during the tournament at The Olde Course and set the Cottonwood course record a couple of weeks ago. “That was a great performance to bring home the individual win,” Smith said.
The Lancers will now prepare for the NJCAA National Championship in Newton, Kansas, May 13–16.
“We are going to work hard to continue the momentum into the NJCAA National Championship,” Smith said.
