EWC rodeo hosts Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding School

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The Eastern Wyoming College Rodeo Team hosted its third annual Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding School Jan. 9-11 at the Goshen County Fairgrounds.

The three-day school drew 25 students from across the western United States and Canada, creating a diverse group of young rodeo athletes.

More than 75 head of bucking horses, supplied by three stock contractors, were available for instruction. The livestock ranged in difficulty, allowing riders to be matched with horses appropriate to their experience level. Instruction was led by Troy Crowser, Louie Brunson and Cleve Schmidt, who worked closely with participants throughout the weekend.

The school is designed to allow young, up-and-coming rodeo athletes to learn on quality horses using proper equipment in a safe, structured environment. The EWC Rodeo Team also used a new bucking machine during the school to help riders develop proper technique and build confidence.

“We try to match every student with horses that fit their skill level,  from riders getting on their very first bucking horse to those who have already been on more than 100 head,” EWC rodeo coach Whit Peterson said. “That allows everyone to learn and progress in a way that is both productive and safe.”

While the riding school is not a fundraiser, it plays an important role in youth development and recruiting. The program provides high school students the opportunity to learn proper riding techniques while experiencing the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo program firsthand.

Funding for the school comes from the EWC Rodeo Team’s annual fundraiser and a grant from the EWC Foundation, which help cover the cost of livestock, instructors, feed, facility rental and support staff.
