In January, Julie Sherbeyn took over the reins of the EWC Student Success Center (SSC) and she immediately began connecting with students and faculty members to assess the needs of the Center.

“I’m excited about instituting some new practices to meet the students where they are, when they need us,” shared Ms. Sherbeyn.

The SSC offers services for all EWC students in need of success strategies.  New to the SSC is the Student Success Program, a pilot program based off the current strategies in place for student athletes and designed for students whose academic standing is probation or suspension.  It offers retention strategies to track attendance and academic progress and includes weekly support meetings.

There is a new Writing Center in place within the SSC with Dr. Thomas Eaton. The Writing Center is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-6 pm and is also available online through Canvas with the ability to ZOOM with students not physically on campus. Dr. Eaton can help with the following: research papers, class papers, citation/documentation, job applications, scholarship applications, and transfer applications.

The SSC also provides professional Math tutoring with EWC Instructor Vicky Mayfield. She is available from 10 am – 12 pm on Tuesdays, and 11 am – 1 pm on Wednesdays.  Students who work with Ms. Mayfield may be eligible for a Student Center meal card.

There are bachelors prepared tutors offering individual and group study in Chemistry, Veterinary Technology, Psychology, and History new to the SSC.   “Dr. Bittner’s encouragement of the Vet Tech study groups have made a significant impact in his calculations class,” added Sherbeyn.

Finally, in an effort to be more flexible to student study habits, a SSC course has been created within Canvas with the help of College Relations and Instructional Technology.  “Our students and faculty currently live in Canvas so our Student Success Center course will be available to all registered students and faculty and offers easy access support to both groups.  It is intended as a sort of clearinghouse for student needs.”

The course provides access to peer tutor schedules and an opportunity to meet with tutors online and via ZOOM outside of regular SSC hours.  The SSC course provides information on the Douglas SSC, the Writing Center, and the Professional Math Tutor.  Many other resources imperative for student success are linked through the course including Counseling and Disability Services, Financial Aid, and Career Services.  Faculty also have access to the course to easily identify discipline-specific tutors for their students and submit Tutor Referral, Retention Referral and Academic Alerts within the same platform.
