Lancer Golf Teams Sweep North Platte Community College Tournament

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancer golf teams turned in strong performances at the North Platte Community College tournament, Sept. 10-11, with both the men’s and women’s teams finishing atop the team leaderboard.

The Lancer men won the tournament with a 1-over-par team score, finishing 40 strokes ahead of second-place Lamar Community College. The Lancer B team tied for fourth at 57-over par.

The EWC women also claimed the team title, shooting a combined 57-over par. Northeastern Junior College finished second at 199-over par.

“Both teams played great in North Platte,” EWC golf coach Zach Smith said. “Especially on the second day when the course was tougher than the one we played the day before and the wind was a lot stronger on day two.”

The Lancer women dominated the individual leaderboard, placing five golfers in the top 10.

Ashlyn Matheson led the way, winning the tournament with a 7-over-par score. Evita Babraityte finished second at 11-over, while Madison Fujimoto placed third at 14-over.

Tristyn Green finished fifth at 25-over, and Kaidyn Patterson placed ninth at 43-over. Izabel Nelson finished 12th at 47-over.

“I was super excited for Evita and Ashlyn,” Smith said. “For Evita to shoot minus-1 and Ash to shoot plus-1 on that course is something special.”

Matheson’s performance marked her second individual college tournament victory.

“Ash played great both days to get her second college individual win,” Smith said.

The Lancer women also set a team record during the tournament, shooting a 304 in the second round.

“The girls fired a team record 304 on the second day because of some stellar play from all the girls,” Smith said.

On the men’s side, Lamar Community College’s Cody Shazer won the individual title at 1-under par.

Three Lancers, Stockton Archibald, Ben Brown and Jace Nielsen,  tied for second at even par.

Aiden Walker tied for fifth at 4-over, while Nash Coleman tied for 11th at 12-over. Jex Jones, Kaden Linford and Troy Young also competed for EWC.

“Likewise, Jace, Ben and Stockton all played solid through the two rounds to finish in a three-way tie for second,” Smith said.

The Lancers finished the tournament at 1-over par despite competing on two courses they were unfamiliar with.

“It was a positive sign for the men’s squad to finish 1-over total for the tournament on two courses we aren’t familiar with,” Smith said.

EWC will continue its season with an eye toward building on its strong start.

“We are off to a good start but need to keep working each week to reach our season goals,” Smith said.
