RE: Update on Canvas System Restoration and Continued Monitoring

Dear Lancer Community,

As you are well aware, the Canvas platform was brought back online with Instructure on Thursday, May 7th, 2026. The College will continue to monitor and provide updates to the College community in the event an additional disruption occurs.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to every student and employee for your patience and diligence as the College navigated the challenges of this breach; your resilience remains the cornerstone of our community.

This nationwide disruption created significant hurdles for our students, faculty and employees. I want to specifically thank our faculty for your quick, thoughtful responses to student needs during this time. Students, please continue to communicate directly with your faculty members if you have any remaining unresolved questions regarding your classes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hawes

RE: Update on Canvas Outage

EWC Students,
Canvas is currently experiencing a nationwide service disruption, and students may be unable to access the platform.  Faculty are aware of the situation and will meet with administration on Friday morning to discuss how the College will move forward as we wait for Canvas to come back online.
Students should work directly with their instructor or faculty member regarding coursework, deadlines, or alternative instructions while access to Canvas is unavailable.
Thank you for your patience throughout this difficult situation.
Dr. Hawes
President
Eastern Wyoming College

RE: Canvas in Crisis

Folks,
Just a few minutes ago I was informed that Canvas was “undergoing scheduled maintenance.” Please know there is nothing “scheduled” about this situation and the folks at Canvas are investigating right now.
Although I appreciate your frustration, I’m sure the technicians are working as quickly as possible to restore access. Please be patient.
Thank you.

RE: Cybersecurity Incident involving Canvas

Eastern Wyoming College (“EWC”) has been notified of a potential information security incident involving Instructure, the third-party provider of the Canvas Learning Management System used by the College. This incident has impacted approximately 9,000 institutions and 270 million users, world wide.

The reported incident may involve names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and Canvas inbox communications. At this time, there is no evidence that passwords, Social Security numbers, financial information, or other sensitive personal information have been compromised.

Upon learning of the issue, EWC immediately began reviewing the matter, coordinating with Canvas, implementing additional security precautions, and monitoring systems for any unauthorized activity.

The investigation remains ongoing. Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of transparency, the College is providing this notice to students and employees.

Students and employees are encouraged to remain alert for suspicious emails or communications and may choose to update their passwords as a precaution.

Eastern Wyoming College remains committed to protecting student and employee information within the institutional systems.

If you have questions or need to report suspicious activity, please send an email to EWC’s IT Department:  itservicedesk@ewc.wy.edu
