Administrative Regulation Title: Simulation in Educational Programs
Regulation Number: 4.6.2
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) endorses the use of a practice-oriented curriculum that places emphasis on both theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skills. Educational programs offered by EWC in skill-based learning, i.e., nursing or other career and technical education programs where learning through practice occupies a central role, may utilize simulation in the classroom setting. Simulation may be used to integrate theoretical knowledge into practice.
Definitions:
Simulation: the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time. Educational simulations may require the use of models. These models represent key characteristics or behaviors of the selected system or process, whereas the simulation represents the evolution of the model over time.
Simulations, which may be in the form of computerized models, represent an innovative teaching method to stimulate several senses at the same time among learners. Simulation may be used to reflect real-life conditions and provide students the opportunity to work in situations that closely represent real settings, without endangering the student or others, i.e., patients or other participants. The simulation method should be used to:
- Allow students the opportunity to repeatedly practice their skills until they develop a sense of proficiency.
- Learn at their own pace.
- Replicate clinical practices or on-the-job scenarios in a safe environment.
EWC educational programs that have licensure or specialized accreditation requirements must ensure that those simulation practices comply with the licensing and specialized accreditation requirements.
