The Eastern Wyoming College Lancer Golf team hosted a Region IX scrimmage on Friday, September 11, at the Cottonwood Golf Course in Torrington. There were five men’s teams competing in the one-day, 18-hole scrimmage.
The Lancers topped the leader board with a team score of 294, 21 strokes ahead of McCook Community College who finished second with a score of 315.
“It felt great getting out on the course to watch the guys compete on Friday. We played pretty well for the most part, considering we had the nasty fall weather spell come through last week that produced cold and wet conditions on Friday. I was very happy for freshman Russel Sprecher, as he was able to win his first college tournament,” said Coach Zach Smith. “It was also freshman Owen Walsh’s first tournament win but he was playing as our 6th man and so his score wasn’t able to be used for the team standings. The five players that qualified to play in the top five the first week were Tomas Kubata, Remington Newell, Russel Sprecher, Tim Van Stiphout and Luca Rodrigues. The other 5 EWC players were playing for the tournament experience. We have some things to work on but overall it was a great start to the season. I’m excited to see how we play in McCook this week. It’s the most challenging course we play in the region and we have plenty of young guys that haven’t seen the course yet.”
Sprecher, freshman, Casper, WY shot a 71 to win the tournament. Other Lancers on the scrimmage team scored as follows:
Kubata, sophomore, Prague, Czech Republic – 73, tied 3rd
Van Stiphout, freshman, Hasselt, Belguim – 74, 5th
Rodrigues, sophomore, Benoni, South Africa – 76, tied 8th
Newell, freshman, Spanish Fork, UT – 78, 12th
Lancers playing for tournament experience shot as follows:
Walsh, freshman, Ottawa, Canada – 71
Conrado Chozas, freshman, Madrid, Spain – 75
Eric Stevens, sophomore, Bridgeport, NE – 79
Brendan Thomas, freshman, Farmington, UT – 79
Tyler Wallace, freshman, Ephraim, UT – 82
The Lancers will compete in a dual with McCook Community College in Kimball, NE on September 17th before traveling to McCook for a Region IX Scrimmage on Sept 18th.
