EWC Golf Teams Swept McCook Invite

October 16, 2024

Eastern Wyoming College’s Men’s and Women’s Golf Team won the MCC Invite in McCook on Oct. 10-11.

“It was a smaller field for the women but once again we showed up and played very well,” Lancer Head Golf Coach Zach Smith said. “Especially for their first time on the difficult course in McCook.”

The Lancer men’s team finished on the top of the leader board shooting a +22, while the ladies also finished ahead of the competition. Six of the Lancer men and six of the Lancer ladies finished in the top 10. Lady Lancer Jessica Applegarth finished on the top of the ladies leaderboard with a +11.

“Jessica played lights out to win the individual tournament by 29 strokes,” Smith said. “To shoot 76,79 at McCook is unreal, we were all very excited for her.”

Lancer Jessica Applegarth tees off at the McCook College Invite in McCook, Nebraska. Applegarth won the tournament and helped the Lady Lancers finish the tournament on the top of the leaderboard.

Lady Lancer Bailey Watson finished in second, with teammates Georgie Lou Paterakis finishing third, and Shayla Clayton finishing fourth. Lancer Halle Allen came in at seventh, while Quinlann Yeager finished in 10th. Lancer Elliann Irick also competed.

“The guys as a whole played very well again this week,” Smith said. “To have six guys in the top 10 was a strong performance. Josh played great on day one to have a share of the lead going into day two but let a couple holes get away from him on the second day, to fall to second place. Sophomores Tytan, Taiki, Braylon and Mathis also continue to play well each week.”

Lancer Josh Chapman finished the MCC Invite in second place with a +3. Teammate Taiki Sugawara finished in fourth with a +6. Braylon Bingham finished in sixth, with teammates Mathis Fortin in seventh, and Jax Oviatt, and Tytan Birchall tying for eighth place. Lancer Josh Lane finished in a tie for 11th. Lancers Freddie Dancox, Colton Powell, and Jamie Lambert also competed.

“I’m proud of our team’s willingness to work hard on the course and that they recognize we need to be just as good off the course in our community as we can be on the course.” Smith said. “Every October we wear polos on Friday to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a fight that hits close to home with my family and so many others. It’s also a good reminder that we are all fighting one thing or another and it’s good to be there for one another for support and love.”
